Are you headed to Toronto for the ALA conference next week?
There is no doubt that the ALA conference will be fast paced and exciting this year. The conference agenda is jam-packed with keynote speeches, educational sessions and even a performance by REO Speedwagon!
Industry events like ALA provide an opportunity to explore emerging trends in legal, connect with leaders in the field and network with peers. However, beware that time will slip away from you quickly. So, in order to make the most of your short time at ALA, we’ve put together a few helpful tips:
#1: Set intentions for your time.
Why have you chosen to attend ALA this year? What type of outcomes would make your trip a smashing success? Whether you are looking to learn the latest best practices, explore software vendors or network with peers, it is important to start the conference with a clear set of outcomes you’d like to see as a result of your ALA attendance. Begin by defining “what success looks like.”
#2: Create an ALA conference action plan.
Use the intentions that you've set above to make an action plan. Become familiar with the conference agenda and event locations in order to plan where and how you will spend your time.
#3: Download the Annual Conference Event App.
Navigating a large conference like ALA can be overwhelming at times, but technology is on your side. Download the Annual Conference Event App to explore speakers and exhibitors and view the conference agenda at your fingertips. You can also use the “my briefcase function” to customize your schedule, highlight your favorite speakers, save contacts and take notes.
#4: Visit the HIVE.
The HIVE is a new addition to the conference this year and you won’t want to miss out on the interesting discussions that will take place around how technology is converging with legal to give birth to a new era. At the HIVE, you’ll learn how best to leverage the latest technologies, like social media, to drive success at your firm. This definitely is the place to be while at ALA this year.
#5: Leave Room for Serendipity.
Although we are advocates for having a strategy and sticking to a plan, it is important not to overlook the exciting (and possibly career-changing) networking opportunities that can happen at the spur of the moment. Be focused enough to achieve the goals that you’ve set for the conference, but flexible enough to take advantage of serendipity.
